Security Camera Installation: Wired vs Wireless, NVR vs Cloud, and What It Costs

April 10, 202610 min readBy NeighborTechs Team

Security cameras are one of the most requested services at NeighborTechs. Whether you're protecting a home, retail store, warehouse, or office building, the right camera system deters crime, provides evidence when incidents occur, and gives you peace of mind with remote viewing from your phone. Here's everything you need to know before investing.

Wired vs Wireless Cameras

Wired (PoE) Cameras Power over Ethernet (PoE) cameras get both power and data through a single Ethernet cable. They're the professional standard for a reason:

  • Pros: Rock-solid reliability, no WiFi interference, consistent quality, no battery maintenance, supports long cable runs up to 300ft
  • Cons: Requires running cables, higher upfront installation cost
  • Best for: Permanent installations, businesses, large properties, anywhere reliability matters

Wireless (WiFi) Cameras WiFi cameras connect to your existing network and are powered by AC adapter or battery.

  • Pros: Easy DIY install, no cable runs, flexible placement
  • Cons: WiFi interference causes dropouts, battery cameras need regular charging, bandwidth-intensive with multiple cameras, compressed video quality
  • Best for: Renters, temporary setups, supplementing a wired system

Our recommendation: Wired PoE cameras for any permanent installation. The reliability difference is significant. WiFi cameras are fine as doorbell cameras or temporary solutions but shouldn't be your primary security system.

NVR vs Cloud Storage

NVR (Network Video Recorder) An NVR is a dedicated box that records all camera feeds to an internal hard drive. Your footage stays on your property.

  • No monthly fees — one-time purchase
  • 24/7 continuous recording — not just motion clips
  • Full resolution — no cloud compression
  • Privacy — footage stays local
  • Typical cost: $200-$600 for a 4-8 channel NVR with 2-4TB storage

Cloud Storage Cloud cameras upload footage to the manufacturer's servers. You access it through their app.

  • Monthly subscription — typically $3-$10 per camera per month
  • Motion-only recording — misses events between triggers
  • Accessible anywhere — even if the NVR is stolen or destroyed
  • Dependent on internet — no internet = no recording

Best approach: Use an NVR for continuous local recording with cloud backup for critical cameras. This gives you the best of both worlds.

Camera Placement Strategy

Where you place cameras matters more than which cameras you buy. Focus on these areas:

Home 1. **Front door** — captures 40% of all break-in attempts 2. **Back door/patio** — second most common entry point 3. **Driveway/garage** — monitors vehicles and package deliveries 4. **Side gates** — covers blind spots 5. **Interior hallway** — captures intruders who bypass exterior cameras

Business 1. **All entry/exit points** — every door, loading dock, and gate 2. **Cash register area** — employee theft prevention and dispute resolution 3. **Parking lot** — liability protection and employee safety 4. **Server room / inventory storage** — high-value asset protection 5. **Public areas** — slip-and-fall liability, customer incidents

Pro tip: Position cameras at 8-10 feet high, angled slightly downward. This captures faces clearly while being difficult to reach and tamper with. Avoid pointing cameras directly into bright lights or windows — the glare washes out the image.

What Resolution Do You Need?

  • 1080p (2MP): Minimum acceptable. OK for general overview of an area.
  • 2K (4MP): Good balance of quality and storage. Can identify faces at 20-30 feet.
  • 4K (8MP): Excellent detail. Can read license plates and identify faces at 40+ feet. Requires more storage and bandwidth.

For most installations, 4MP cameras are the sweet spot. Use 4K cameras at key positions (entrances, cash registers) where detail matters most.

What Does Installation Cost?

DIY - **2 wireless cameras + base**: $100-$300 - **4 PoE cameras + NVR (self-install kit)**: $300-$600

Professional Installation (NeighborTechs) - **4-camera PoE system (residential)**: $800-$1,500 installed - **8-camera PoE system (small business)**: $1,500-$3,000 installed - **16+ camera system (commercial)**: $3,000-$8,000+ installed - **Per additional camera**: $150-$300 installed (including cable run)

Our pricing includes cameras, NVR, cabling, mounting hardware, configuration, and remote viewing setup on your phone.

Legal Considerations

  • Outdoor cameras on your property: Legal everywhere in the US
  • Indoor cameras in your business: Legal in most states, but you must inform employees. Check your state laws.
  • Audio recording: Many states require two-party consent for audio recording. We recommend disabling audio on cameras in states with strict wiretapping laws.
  • Neighbor privacy: Don't point cameras at your neighbor's windows or property. Keep cameras focused on your property.
